World Languages

Description

Communication in languages other than English has become increasingly important in a diverse nation and in an ever-shrinking world. Second language learners acquire the skills and cultural understandings that permit them to function in a non-English speaking environment.

Technological advances have provided new opportunities for learners to use their second language skills in interactions with other speakers and to learn about other cultures whether or not they travel beyond their classrooms.

The CHRHS Modern and Classical language teachers employ traditional methods for language acquisition in addition to modern methods utilizing Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling(TPRS) and Comprensible Input (CI). This method has seen tremendous results across the country and CHRHS is no exception. Students acquire speaking, listening, reading and writing skills better and faster than from traditional methods which teach students about language rather than teaching proficiency. Grammar is learned through immersion in the lower levels and becomes more of a focus in the upper levels.

The Latin program uses a traditional reading based approach in the early levels to prepare students for translating original Latin writings at the upper levels. The study of Latin offers students many benefits including reinforcing proficiency in English vocabulary and grammar as well as appreciating Latin literature, life and culture.
