Proficiency Based Diploma

The state of Maine requires a Proficiency Based Diploma beginning with the Class of 2021.  To demonstrate proficiency is different than simply having seat time. Our K-8 schools are primarily proficiency-based systems (also known as standards-based systems.) Students are expected to demonstrate mastery of content before moving on. Although the high school will retain a 0-100 grading scale, instruction and assessments are designed for students to demonstrate proficiency in their understanding of content.

High school transcripts will reflect grades on a 0-100 scale for coursework as well as a binary proficiency score in 7 content areas identified by the state (Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education/Health, Career and Educational Development, and Visual and Performing Arts). The binary score will be either "P" for Proficient or "NP" for Not Yet Proficient. Students are also required to demonstrate proficiency in Maine's Guiding Principals which we have chosen to be reflected in the 4C's (Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.) The 4C's will also use a binary score.

The proficiency-based diploma requirements can best be understood within policy IKF.
